From ecommerce platform to commerce engine

For Luijten-VVZ, ecommerce has evolved into much more than online ordering. Alongside its webshop and mobile ordering app, the company increasingly uses Heart.work as a commerce engine that supports additional processes, workflows and custom-built applications.

The trigger was a practical one. Within an assortment of approximately 25,000 products, a significant number of items lacked consistent product information or suitable images.

This created challenges within the webshop. Customers could not always easily recognise products or verify that they had selected the correct item.

Building internal applications with the Heart.work API

To improve and automate this process, Luijten-VVZ actively uses the Heart.work Commerce API.

The goal was not to replace existing systems, but to innovate faster without becoming dependent on external software vendors or lengthy development projects.

"With the Heart.work Commerce API, I am able to develop new applications myself that help us solve these challenges."

The API gives direct access to product data, workflows and commerce logic, allowing Luijten-VVZ to build solutions that fit its own operational reality.

Creating a smart workflow for missing product images

One of the applications developed by Luijten-VVZ focuses on products that do not have images available from external data providers.

Using the API, products without images are automatically identified. Based on ERP data and warehouse locations, the application generates an efficient route for warehouse staff.

Employees immediately see:

which product needs to be photographed;

which product needs to be photographed;

where it is located;

where it is located;

which products can be combined into the same route.

which products can be combined into the same route.

As a result, product enrichment becomes part of a practical operational workflow rather than a separate ecommerce task.

Product enrichment without ecommerce expertise

A key requirement was simplicity.

The process needed to be usable by any employee, regardless of their knowledge of ecommerce systems or product management.

Because routing, identification and workflow management are automated, employees can focus on taking photos while the platform handles the rest of the process behind the scenes.

From warehouse photo to professional product presentation

Once a photo is taken, an automated AI-driven enrichment process begins.

Images are automatically:

converted into isolated product images;

Additional commercial product content is then generated and published through the Heart.work API.

Once enrichment is completed, the updated information becomes immediately available within both the webshop and the mobile ordering app.

"Even a photo of a damaged paint can destined for our outlet section ultimately becomes a clean and usable product image."

Greater control over product data

Previously, missing product images often had to be requested from suppliers or searched for manually.

Today, Luijten-VVZ has a structured process that allows product information to be enriched internally and continuously.

This delivers several benefits:

A commerce engine that supports continuous innovation

For Luijten-VVZ, this approach demonstrates that digital innovation does not have to result in large custom development projects or entirely new systems.

With Exact Globe+ as the operational backbone and Heart.work as the commerce engine, the organisation can continuously optimise processes while building on its existing foundation.

"The combination of a stable foundation, a clear API and strong documentation gives us the freedom to build applications that directly support our way of working."
